College Credit Course Work

College credit course-work will lead you to an early childhood certificate, diploma, or advanced college degree. A college degree will be more marketable and should lead to higher earnings as a professional.

To explore the options a bit more in detail and explore the programs available in North Carolina, select a credit path first. Click on the path to see the schools in North Carolina that provide the corresponding programs.

Credit Paths:

  • Child Care Certificate

    Child Care Certificates may be earned with completion of 16-18 community college credit hours and can be specific to working with infants and toddlers, school-age children, early childhood or children with special needs.

  • Child Care Diploma

    The North Carolina Child Care diploma requires the completion of 30 hours of community college courses.

  • Associate Degree

    An Associate Degree requires the completion of 64 -76 credit hours from a community college or private institution. The exact course requirements vary from program to program. To find more information about certain school's program, you will need to contact the college program directly.

  • North Carolina Early Childhood Credential

    The North Carolina Early Childhood Credential is the completion of two early education courses with a community college. This credential prepares you to work with children directly. All of the community colleges in North Carolina offer course work leading to a NCE credential.

  • North Carolina Early Childhood Administration Credential

    North Carolina Early Childhood Administration Credential - Level I, requires the completion of 12 credit hours in administration and early childhood education courses with the community college. All licensed child care Directors are required to complete this by the year 2000.

  • Bachelor Degree

    A Bachelors Degree is a four-year degree from a college or university. The program names vary as do the specific program requirements at each school.

    You may want to add to your career options by getting certification to teach birth through kindergarten-commonly referred to as B-K certificate.

  • Bachelor Degree with Birth-Kindergarten Certification

    The B-K certification enables teachers to teach in programs serving children birth through kindergarten.

  • Masters Degree

    A Masters degree requires additional hours beyond a Bachelors degree. Usually the course work requires one to two years to complete.

  • Youth Development Leadership Graduate Degree Specialization

  • Doctorate Degree

    A Doctorate degree requires the completion of a Bachelors degree and usually requires the completion of a Masters also. The program requirements vary from school to school.

  • Certification or Degree via Distance Learning

    Distance Learning is another option in getting your course work done. Often one course will be offered via satellite, using fiber optic technology, online learning or other emerging technologies. Check with the community college nearest you. There are opportunities to earn your entire early childhood or school age care degree via distance learning. The program requirements vary from school to school.
